My name is Joshua Steimle, and I'm a native Californian living in exile. The policies enacted by politicians and judges in California did not cause my departure as they have for many others, but they are part of what prevents my return.

This blog is dedicated to politics and culture with no regard for party. My mission is to expose failure because it is by objectively examining failure that we learn how to succeed. I have some ideas about how California, the United States, and other countries can succeed, but I could be wrong, and I invite your criticism of my ideas just as I will be critical of yours. Together, we can build better families, better cities, better states, better countries, and a better world.

The Problem With Conservatism

Conservatism’s problem is that it generally doesn’t become majority thought except in a crisis. Conservative principles would have prevented the housing boom/bust cycle, but people didn’t care about fiscal responsibility either with their own wallets or the government’s until things got bad. Now living frugally is chic and people are saving more and paying off debts. Eventually this will spread…

Obama Claims Cap & Trade “a jobs bill”

The president said the bill will spark a “clean energy transformation” of the U.S. economy and “make possible the creation of millions of new jobs.”

“Make no mistake,” he emphasized. “This is a jobs bill.”

So claimed President Obama in an appearance today in the Rose Garden. Technically, the claim is true. If the government funds so-called “clean energy” then yes, lots of…

Why I’m Leaving the Republican Party

I’ve debated this decision for years. Ever since I wrote a letter to President Ronald Reagan as an elementary school child and got a response back I’ve considered myself a Republican and was proud of it. In officially declaring myself to no longer be a Republican I feel, in some ways, as though I’m a traitor or that I’m dooming…

The Janet Contreras Letter

On June 17th Glenn Beck read a letter from Janet Contreras on his show. Janet is a former Democrat recently turned Republican recently turned…well, she doesn’t know what she is anymore, but she doesn’t seem to be fond of either Democrats or Republicans. While the letter is not as well-written as it could be, her thoughts are expressed clearly enough…

The US Tax System Explained

I just got this via email, so I have no idea what the source is, but it doesn’t matter since there are no claims made that can’t easily be verified by the reader for themselves.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way…

How to Prevent Nuclear Proliferation

In order to curb the proliferation of nuclear weapons we need to understand why countries want nuclear weapons, and then we need to understand the incentives that could be put in place to cause them to not want those weapons anymore. We can boil the reasons for countries wanting nuclear weapons down to four primary motivations; 1) self-protection, 2) money/power/prestige,…

Which Countries Can Be Trusted With Nuclear Weapons?

Those who had them first. If there is ever to be a rollback of nuclear weapons worldwide, it should start with those who got the weapons most recently. Why? Because only those countries who had the weapons in the absence of them being possessed by other countries can be trusted to not use the weapons irresponsibly. “But didn’t the US…

Our Real Roots

I received this in an email from my father. It sounds great, but does anyone know where this came from, and has anyone verified that all the statements, quotes, and facts included in it are accurate? If you know, please post a comment.

Energy Myths and Realities by Keith O. Rattie, CEO of Questar

Thanks to Eran for first publishing this. This address was given April 2, 2009 by Keith O. Rattie, Chairman, President and CEO of Questar Corporation, at Utah Valley University. It’s available on the Questar website in PDF form, which is part of the reason why I’m posting the text version here. I’m not a big fan of reading PDFs. I’m also…
