This Website’s Purpose
When I was in elementary school I used to get in arguments with my peers during lunchtime. For me, winning an argument meant saying something the other guy couldn’t refute. But there was always one guy whose method of “winning” involved talking fast and loud, never letting you get a word in, and calling you names. If you’ve ever listened to Sean Hannity argue with someone he disagrees with then you know what kind of person I’m talking about.
But that’s not how I roll. For me, winning is not the point of an argument–learning and progress is the point, and the best environment for that is one wherein all sides are respected, people try to be as objective as they can, and logic and reason rule.
My mission with this website is not to pander to a group of people who already agree with me but to change minds, and perhaps my mind will be changed in the process.
If you’re trying to figure out what label to put on me then I suppose you could call me a white, conservative Republican, but if you’re the kind of person who stops there and says “Oh, one of those people” then you’re probably missing out on a lot of things in life because that’s not exactly open-minded, is it? So I’ll make you a deal. If you’re opinion is different than mine, I’ll listen to and seriously consider it. You’re under no obligation to do the same for me, but is that the kind of person you want to be?
About the Author
If you’ve ever looked at how much you pay in taxes and then looked at how much the government spends and then thought “Where does all this money go?!” then you’re like me. If you’ve ever looked at laws and thought “I wouldn’t vote for that law, and I don’t know of anybody who would ever vote for that law other than a few crazy people, so where did that law come from?” then you’re like me. If you’ve ever looked at politicians and feel as though most, if not all, of them are looking out for their own best interests rather than serving the people who elected them, then you’re like me. If you’ve ever been frustrated because it seems the government wants to run your life and you feel like you’re being told “do this” and “don’t do that” all day, then you’re like me.
My name is Joshua James Steimle. I was born in 1975 in Arcadia, California (Pasadena actually, if you want to get technical), just outside Los Angeles. I was raised in a middle-class home until I turned 18 when I went to college. Since then I have lived in Idaho (2 years), Brazil (2 years), and Utah (10 years), and have visited much of the United States. My native language is English, but I’m also fluent in Portuguese and can get by with Spanish.
I’m a husband and father. I’m an entrepreneur and like talking about business, venture capital, and economics, but I prefer skateboarding to golf, and Dinosaur Jr. to…whatever it is my business peers listen to. I do triathlons and I’m a Ben and Jerry’s addict. I’m Mormon but love learning about other religions. My father was an optical engineer who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, and my mother was a 2nd grade teacher in the public school system. I have a Master’s of Information Systems Management, and my wife has a Master’s of Marriage, Family, and Human Development. I’m an Eagle Scout, and love education, but was rejected by the Harvard Business School. I could go on, but I need to start writing.
