Why do Jews Vote Democrat?

Since 1916 the “Jewish vote” has done to a Republican only once, and that was in 1920. Since then, they have overwhelmingly voted Democrat. Why is this? No, I really want to know, because I have absolutely no clue. Ok, I don’t want to know why they voted for Truman in 1948, I want to know why Clinton got 80% and 78% in both of his elections. I want to know why Gore got 79% of the Jewish vote, and Kerry got 76%.

Despite having had three Jewish friends growing up (all named David, incidentally), I don’t know much about Jewish political preferences. I would assume they would vote for the party that is most supportive of Israel as a country. I would assume they would vote for the party whose social views on family and freedom most closely match theirs. And yet they do just the opposite. Can somebody explain to me why this is? I feel like I’m really missing something here when they vote for the party that wants to negotiate with people who are threatening to wipe Israel off the map, who deny the Holocaust, and who wants all Jews dead.
